Viscosupplementation
Viscosupplementation can help people with osteoarthritis of the knee who have not benefited from medication or other traditional measures. With this therapeutic option, naturally occurring gel-like substances called hyaluronates are injected directly into the knee joint to act as lubricants for bones and as shock absorbers for joints. It is best described as an "oil change" for the knee.
Viscosupplementation is most effective for mild to moderate osteoarthritis, and its risk of infection is extremely low. Patients typically require three treatments one week apart from one another.
Dr. Kripsak, who has 15 years of experience performing viscosupplementation, uses the procedure to also treat arthritis affecting the shoulders and fingers.
